Practice daily gratitude this holiday season

Practicing daily gratitude can be life changing, and a favorite book of mine on this topic is 365 Thank Yous by John Kralik.

Inspired by a beautiful, simple note his ex-girlfriend had sent to thank him for his Christmas gift, John Kralik imagined that he might find a way to feel grateful by writing thank-you notes.

I could relate to this premise of the book, as my mother always impressed upon me the importance of writing a personal thank you note for gifts I received as well as for events that I was invited to. As the years have progressed, people have gotten so busy that the art form of a simple hand written thank you note has gone astray.

John Kralik's book is a gem,  and shows how the simple act of daily gratitude through writing thank you notes can be life altering.

Try this with your kids this holiday season. You can either go with them to pick out some special stationary or else make some notes yourselves. Train your children early to write thank you notes to people to whom they are appreciative, and watch them reap the rewards of this simple act of kindness and gratitude!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving time is all about gratitude, and there are so many things to be grateful for.

When I teach yoga to kids, I end the class with the Do Nothing Pose (Savasana), playing a soothing lullaby while the children relax in this pose. (The kids love House at Pooh Corner by Kenny Loggins.) Once the song is over, I have them slowly come to a seated position in Easy Pose.

From this seated position, I ask each child what they are grateful for. I start by telling them what I am grateful for, and then tell them that Gratitude is a Winning Attitude!

Try practicing gratitude with your children this Thanksgiving, and extend this attitude of appreciation through the upcoming holidays and beyond!

Yoga Breathing for Kids

All of our physical and mental actions have an influence on our breathing. By teaching kids to breathe in and out through their noses, they will learn how to calm themselves by focusing on their breath.

Furthermore, nose breathing keeps children focused, as opposed to shallow mouth breathing which can make them feel tense, irritable and anxious.

Try this simple breathing exercise with your child.  I like to call it Take FiveHave them take a slow deep breath in through their nose for the count of 5, holding their breath for a second or two at the top, before slowing exhaling through their nose for a backwards count of 5,4,3,2,1. 

Let them know that Yoga breathing is fun, and that they can Take Five any time during the day when they feel stressed or out of sorts.

Halloween is Coming!

Try the Jack-o-Lantern pose this coming month of October. Kids love to make spooky faces, and this pose actually exercises their facial muscles!

Have your child sit in easy pose, breathing in and out through their nose. Next have them interlace their hands above their heads and pretend they are a Jack-o-Lantern, making a ghoulish grin with their mouths.

September is Children's Good Manners Month

September is the ideal time to teach the basics of good manners to kids as it is the start of the academic year for many schools.

Children not only feel good about themselves when they learn these valuable life skills, but they are also able to get along better with their peers, teachers, and family.

Applying the fundamentals of respect, kindness, courtesy and thoughtfulness enable children to become more considerate of others and less self absorbed.

Lastly, kids are more apt to be able to handle life in general when they know what to do in different situations that might arise.

Teaching Yoga to Kids: Accepting them the way that they are without expectations

I have not been keeping up with my blog on a regular basis lately as I have just sent my oldest child off to college.  Now that I am back, I wanted to share some tips for teaching yoga to young children.

The ultimate way to guide children is to accept them the way that they are, and to teach them to approach yoga without expectations. 

Practicing as a beginner is just like experiencing anything new in life; everything unfolds with time and practice. Making yoga fun for kids in a non-competitive and nurturing environment will sow the seeds for a life-long interest in the mind-body connection which yoga provides.

Women's Health Week

This Mother's Day is the official start of National Women's Health Week which lasts from May 8th to May 14th. This year's theme is "It's your time" and women are encouraged to make their health a top priority.

Many mothers spend so much time taking care of  their children that they ofter neglect their own needs.

This week make it a priority to take care of yourself first -- you will actually be in better shape to take care of those around you if you do this!

Showing your children that you are willing to put your health as a top priority will set a good example for them as well. Practicing yoga is one way to keep yourself fit, both mentally and physically.

Zoo Animals and Yoga

At the end of this month I will be visiting the Bronx Zoo in New York as part of their Animal Tales Extravaganza.

I will be giving a yoga demonstration followed by a book signing on Saturday, May 28th and Sunday, May 29th at 1:00 pm.

The Elephant Pose is one of the animal postures I will be focusing on at this Swinging into Spring Event at the Bronx Zoo, and this forward bending pose is great for stretching out children's over used hamstrings.

To celebrate The ABCs of Yoga for Kids coming out in Spanish, I have included the Spanish translation of the Elephant Pose below.

Happy Spring!

The month of April brings Easter and Passover, as well as the advent of spring. Spring is the transition season between winter and summer, and is a time of growth and renewal. The Hindus celebrate spring with Holi or the Festival of Colors.

I thought of focusing on the RABBIT yoga posture this month, not only because of the Easter Bunny but also because in United States folklore a rabbit foot is thought to bring good luck.

The RABBIT posture (sasangasana) is good for children as well as adults. It stretches your spine, improves digestion, eliminates tension from your upper back and neck, and stimulates your thymus gland, thus strengthening your immune system.

The ABCs of Yoga for Kids has earned the coveted Parent Tested Parent Approved (PTPA) Seal of Approval

I am thrilled that The ABCs of Yoga for Kids received such a high honor, as it was among many entries from across North America competing to earn the PTPA Seal.  Because independent parent volunteers evaluate these products in their own homes, PTPA winners are chosen based on merit and consumer experience -- not on commercial considerations.

Having no experience with yoga (myself or my daughter), I wasn't sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. In fact, before I got to it, my daughter had grabbed the book and was in the living room reading it with a look of wonder in her eyes. We have done "her moves" every night before bed since we received it.

This book made my kids, ages 2, 4, & 7, ask to do yoga every morning! Each pose is arranged in alphabetical order and is accompanied by a short poem and an illustration of each pose. My oldest daughter did yoga at her preschool and was so excited when this book arrived. This didn't disappoint. If you are looking for a book to read before bed at night, this isn't it, but if you want a book to introduce the basics of a great exercise that the whole family can do together, buy this book!

Absolutely amazing! My daughter thought it was the coolest thing ever! She begged me to take it to school.... And now their teacher uses it with the kids daily in class.. Especially when they need a little bit of calm down time.. haha They all rave about it and the teacher is overly impressed with the content! A+ here!! :D

Earthchild Yoga Project in Cape Town, South Africa

I was recently contacted by the Earthchild Project in Cape Town South Africa about donating my children's yoga book to them to use in their township schools. I readily accepted, and am thrilled with all that they are doing to provide children with practical skills to live a more balanced and fulfilling life. They focus on self-awareness, health and wellness, and the environment. Yoga is a focus of their programs in the schools where they teach. Here are some pictures of the kids doing yoga.
