National Yoga Month

September is not only the start of a new school year for kids, but also National Yoga Month. This National observance, designated by the Department of Health & Human Resources, is designed to educate people about the health benefits of yoga and to inspire a healthy lifestyle.

For kids, yoga can improve their concentration and focus, helping them to get better grades in school. Through yoga
children learn how to take stress in stride, dealing more effectively with anything from tests to peer pressure.

Yoga is great for parents as well.  Check out this link which shows how people are celebrating yoga  throughout the United States this month. http://www.gogobot.com/blog/2013/09/11/om-ing-in-on-the-best-hotels-for-yoga/

Enjoy practicing yoga this September, and let the benefits carry you through the upcoming holidays!

Knot Yoga Posture

Try this fun pose called the Knot to naturally unwind:

Knot
On my belly I lie.
The Knot Pose is so easy,
I hardly have to try.
With arms crossed in front of me and legs stretched out behind,
                                                                I focus straight ahead.

Benefits of breath for kids yoga

Breathing in and out of the nose is a key component of a children's yoga practice.

Benefits of nose breathing:
  • Reduces stress
  • Gets more oxygen into the lungs
  • Helps kids to calm themselves by focusing on their breath
In contrast, mouth breathing is shallow, and can cause symptoms of  fight/flight in kids.

Try the Inhale Pose below:

"One of the most important parts of any yoga pose,
Is remembering to breathe deeply
By inhaling through my nose."

Happy Easter!

This month of March brings not only Easter but also the advent of spring.

A fun Easter yoga pose to try is the Rabbit posture (sasangasana).

Some of the benefits of the Rabbit pose include:
  • stretching the spine
  • improving digestion
  • eliminating tension from the upper back and neck
  • improving the immune system.
The exact origin of the Easter Bunny is unclear, but rabbits are an ancient symbol of fertility and new life.

Spring into yoga with this fun yoga pose which is good for both adults and children!

Rabbit Posture

With my upper body on my thighs
I put my head on the floor.
I am a rabbit who loves to explore.
I reach back to hold my feet
Doing yoga is such a treat!
Firmly holding my heels
I lift my back and round it to the sky.
With my forehead close to my knees
I exhale and let out a sigh.
