5 tips for making yoga fun for kids

One of the more beneficial physical activities for kids is yoga. Since children are squirmy, energetic and playful, a variety of fun animal poses can intrigue them while enticing their imagination. 

 5 tips to make yoga fun for kids:

1.  Have children utter amusing noises and sounds related to the poses.  

For example, they can bark like dogs in the Dog posture or meow like cats in the Cat pose.

2.  Keep the exercises short and lively. 
 This helps kids sustain their energy and focus.

3. Children should be encouraged to express creativity and imagination while practicing yoga. 

For example, to enliven the Table pose, you can use plastic plates and food to 'set' each child's 'table'.

4. Another way to capture the attention of kids while practicing yoga is to incorporate songs and music into the practice. 

For example, kids can sing "row, row, row your boat' while in the Boat pose.

5. Lastly, remember that the goal is not doing the 'perfect pose', but rather for children to feel their own bodies in the postures.  

 This will help them to enjoy their yoga practice and instill healthy habits for life.

Beat the Thanksgiving Bloat with These 3 Simple Yoga Poses

Feeling that Thanksgiving bloat? It's easy to overindulge over the holidays and feel bloated after a large meal.

Here are three yoga poses to ease your digestion. These simple postures are good for both adults and children, and families can do them together to explore a natural cure for tummy troubles!

1.) Wind-Shield Wipers (Wind relieving pose): this posture helps relieve bloating and gas pains. Simply lie on your back and hug your knees to your chest.  You can even rock gently side to side to get even more benefits.

2.) Bridge  Pose : this yoga posture stimulates the digestive organs.  Lie on your back and bend your knees.  Then lift up your hips, keeping your arms underneath you.  Hold this position for at least eight counts.

3.) Pretzel Pose (Twist): this gentle yoga posture massages and tones the abdomen and internal organs and is very beneficial for gas and bloating. Sit cross-legged and then bring one arm across your boday and stretch the other arm directly behind you. Look over your shoulder and count to eight before switching sides.



Since the above yoga poses work on internal organs, it is best to wait and practice them at least 30 minutes, and up to an hour, after a large meal.  If you feel bloated right after eating, try lying down and taking some deep breaths to calm the body.

Yoga is not only for kids; consider getting the entire family on board. Determine a night or two during each week where you can practice yoga together as part of your physical fitness routine. The truth is that yoga is beneficial for all ages, and serves as a wonderful way for you to all connect while maintaining good mental and physical health simultaneously.

Try practicing the Boat pose together. This yoga posture strengthens your hips, thighs and abdominal muscles. It and improves focus, concentration and balance.

All told, yoga translates into healthier minds and bodies, not to mention better performance at school.

August is "Get ready for kindergarten month"

What better way for kids to get ready for kindergarten than by practicing simple yoga poses?


Yoga helps develop discipline, aids in the performance of other sports activities, heightens body awareness and self-control, helps children gain strength and flexibility, increases the ability to concentrate and focus, helps kids feel empowered, and helps them stay calm (even kids with ADHD).

Arbor Day Activities for Kids

Arbor Day is Friday, April 25th, and there are many fun ways to get kids involved in this special day which celebrates the importance of trees:
  • Plant a tree with your family
  • Read a book about trees, and then try to identify the trees in your yard or neighborhood
  • Count the rings on a tree stump
  • Visit a local park or take a nature hike
  • Learn about the history of Arbor Day by going to your local library
  • Make leaf prints by collecting leaves and then painting them with tempera paint
  • Create a dish using spices and other foods that are produced by trees. For example, the spice nutmeg is derived from the nutmeg tree
  • Write a letter to community tree planters thanking them for their dedication and hard work
  • Incorporate Arbor Day into a physical activity. Try the Tree yoga posture.
Make a commitment to stewardship this Arbor Day, as you teach children how to respect and nurture the importance of trees in their lives.
    


Earth Day Yoga for Kids

Earth Day is an annual event which is celebrated on April 22nd. Our children are the future, and Earth Day is an opportunity to teach them about valuing nature and wildlife.

There are many fun yoga poses kids can try to celebrate Earth Day.  One activity kids can do is plant a tree and then practice the Tree posture and color the Tree coloring page below.
